The Pan-American Highway, also known as the World's Longest Highway, was established 75 years ago. To commemorate this major achievement, the TDI-Pan-American Endurance Challenge Team set out to drive the course in a 2011 Volkswagen Touareg TDI Clean Diesel SUV. Lokey Volkswagen, located at 27850 U.S. Hwy 19N, Clearwater, FL 33761, is happy to report that the team traveled the 16,000-mile course, across 14 countries in record breaking time: 17 hours and 22 minutes. Driven by Rainer Zietlow, Carlos Fernandez and Marius Biela, the Volkswagen Touareg TDI Clean Diesel successfully beat the previous record by more than three days.

Team lead, Zietlow, reportedly chose the Volkswagen Touareg TDI Clean Diesel for its "durability, high-performance and long-range fuel efficiency."¹ Designed to perform on rough terrain, and paved, gravel, and dirt roads at dramatically different altitudes, it comes equipped with a turbocharged 3.0-liter, V6 TDI engine that puts out 225 horsepower (hp) and 406 lb.-ft. of torque.

"We were able to overcome every weather challenge along the way, and our fueling and transportation stops ran like clockwork," said Zietlow, after he and his team completed the challenge. "Thanks to our sponsors, we were outfitted with a vehicle [the 2011 Volkswagen Touareg TDI Clean Diesel] that could handle the demanding driving schedule and challenging conditions, and had amazing technological and driver support along the way."² He is also planning to donate 10 Euro cents  (roughly 14 U.S. cents), for every kilometer his team drove during the commemorative Pan-American Challenge race to two villages in Latin America. That equates to a donation of well over $3,600.
