One part Jetsons car, one part super sports car, and two-to-three parts Formula-1 racecar...that is the new concept Volkswagen will debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show, in Germany, this week. Called the NILS, the one-seater EV represents Volkswagen's vision for future urban driving.

With two super-sports-car inspired gullwing doors and a sporty rear hatch, the new Volkswagen NILS concept has more doors than it does seats..three times as many, to be exact. However, despite the fact the Volkswagen NILS holds but one occupant, it offers plenty of room behind the hatch for groceries, a handful of small boxes, and bags.

The body, seemingly inspired by a Formula-1 racecar, is equipped with a suite of futuristic technologies. For example, a 15 kW electric motor, touting a range of approximately 40 miles. And, while the concept might not be big (which is the point), it's extremely nimble. Thanks to the careful integration of an overboost function the Volkswagen NILS cruises from zero to 62 miles per hour (mpg) in just 11 seconds. For a compact, EV made for metro area, that's great!

What about charging time? Get this! The Volkswagen NILS one-seater requires only two hours to charge using a standard European outlet.

The surprising size- to-safety ratio of the Volkswagen NILS is also worth mentioning, especially as some people immediately assume small cars are less safe. The fact is, it offers as much protection as the safest large cars available. Among the many features squeezed into the tiny ride are a TFT instrument cluster, intelligent PID touchscreen, stout aluminum space frame, hybrid xenon and LED headlamps, auto distance control, and city emergency braking.
